Ioli Christopoulou, Policy Director and co-founder of The Green Tank, spoke on the Radio City programme on Athens 9.84 about the importance of Posidonia meadows for biodiversity, coastal protection and climate resilience, as well as the need to strengthen restoration efforts in Greece and across the Mediterranean.
In her discussion with journalists Elena Chatziioannou and Panos Polyzoidis, she highlighted the main pressures currently facing Posidonia meadows, including uncontrolled anchoring, seabed disturbance, the impacts of certain activities, and the climate crisis, while also stressing the need to move from protection to restoration.
Particular reference was made to the Interreg Euro-Med ARTEMIS project, in which The Green Tank and the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) participate, as well as to the pilot action in Atzikiari Bay, Sitia, which underlines the importance of monitoring, removing pressures and taking timely restoration measures.
As she noted, Posidonia restoration is not only an environmental priority, but also a European and national obligation under the Nature Restoration Regulation, making the timely preparation of the necessary policy, institutional and scientific tools for implementation all the more urgent.
