
Objective: The Beyond Fossil Gas in CEE project aims to accelerate the phase-out of fossil gas and strengthen climate and energy security in Central and Eastern Europe. By developing evidence-based energy transition pathways for Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Hungary and Germany, the project assesses the future role of fossil gas and viable low-carbon alternatives in the power sector, industry and heating. The project analyses the economic, climate and energy security impacts of these alternatives and, through national stakeholder consultations, co-creates country-specific policy roadmaps that will feed into a joint European Union policy roadmap. It supports upcoming updates of National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) and Long-Term Strategies (2025–2027), contributing to avoiding new fossil gas infrastructure investments, reducing import dependence and aligning national policies with the European Union’s climate objectives.
Our contribution: The Green Tank contributes to the development of energy transition scenarios and the assessment of viable alternatives to fossil gas in Greece. It also organises stakeholder consultations with representatives from public administration, businesses, academia and civil society to co-create a national policy roadmap. In addition, The Green Tank contributes to the project’s communication and advocacy activities by promoting evidence-based policy recommendations that support secure, economically sustainable and climate-neutral energy systems.
