Natural Capital, Biodiversity and the Economy: Why Nature Is an Investment in Our Future

What does it really mean to be a wealthy country in the 21st century? Can a country truly be considered prosperous when its natural capital is being degraded?

In an interview with ESG+ Stories, Ioli Christopoulou, Policy Director and co-founder of The Green Tank, discusses the need to rethink how we measure wealth and well-being. She explains why GDP alone is no longer enough to capture a country’s true prosperity, and why nature should be recognised as a form of capital and an asset that underpins our economy and society.

She explores Greece’s natural wealth, the key pressures it faces, and the policies and financial solutions that can turn the protection and restoration of nature into an investment in the future. These include emerging financing tools such as Nature Credits, which can help mobilise private resources for biodiversity conservation.

The message is clear: nature is not an obstacle to development, but the foundation of economic activity and human well-being.
