About the ministerial decision on the protection of Aoos river

Ioli Christopoulou was a guest on ERT3’s show “Borders” on 12/7/2024, where she spoke with Kalli Zarali and explained the importance of the recent ministerial decision that defines the terms of protection for the part of the Aoos River that was designated as a Protected Landscape and Protected Natural Formation in November 2023.

Among other things, this decision excludes the construction of dams, hydroelectric and other projects that impede the free flow of the river, while promoting sustainable activities for the area (agriculture, livestock, tourism, etc.).

The next objective for the protection of the Aoos river basin is to unite the two protected parts of the river in Greece, namely the part included in the North Pindos National Park and the new Protected Landscape area, into a single national park. The timing is appropriate, as the relevant study is currently in the final stage of preparation at the Ministry of Environment and Energy. With institutional protection now in place on both sides of the border, the basis for the creation of a cross-border park between Greece and Albania is also laid.

As far tourism is concerned, it was stressed that a there needs to be balance between development and ecosystem protection to avoid issues – as with the new Vlorë airport, for which there have been reactions and complaints from organizations and stakeholders. The project is planned in an area that is a stopover for migratory bird species between Europe and Africa. In order to avoid the impacts it will cause, proposals have been put forward for different locations.
