EU Nature Credits consultation: The Green Tank and ARTEMIS share expertise

In July 2025, the European Commission presented the “Roadmap Towards Nature Credits”, an initiative that examines how nature protection and restoration can be enhanced through private finance, and in particular, through reliable, scientifically based and transparent nature credit schemes. This initiative is part of the EU’s broader effort to address the biodiversity funding gap and mobilize additional resources, beyond public funding. The text of the Roadmap was put out for public consultation by the European Commission.

The Green Tank, together with the partners of the Interreg Euro-MED ARTEMIS project, contributed to the public consultation, submitting comments which highlight that this specific Commission initiative is timely and has the potential to cover the current funding gap for biodiversity, provided that it is complementary to public funding and based on integrity, scientific reliability and good governance. To ensure these conditions, it put forward recommendations stemming from the project actions to enhance the restoration of Posidonia meadows and the creation of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) Schemes.
