Montel News features comments by Nikos Mantzaris on the surge in renewable energy curtailments

Montel News featured comments by Nikos Mantzaris, policy analyst and co-founder at The Green Tank, on the sharp rise in renewable energy curtailments in Greece during 2025.

According to The Green Tank’s analysis, renewable electricity curtailments more than doubled in the first nine months of 2025, reaching 1.786 ΤWh, compared to 699 GWh over the same period in 2024.

Nikos Mantzaris explained to Montel that this “explosion” in curtailments results from the rapid increase in renewable capacity combined with Greece’s limited energy storage infrastructure.

Greece still only has 700 MW of pumped hydro energy storage. Thus, excess renewable electricity cannot be stored and is therefore curtailed,” Nikos Mantzaris said, underlining the urgent need for new storage solutions.

He added that due to these curtailments, the increase in green electricity actually injected into the grid was only 8.5%, despite the strong growth in installed renewables.

At the same time, he noted that the “significant increase” in gas usage meant renewables were crowded out of the demand picture.
