At the 5th ESG Universe Forum, Ioli Christopoulou, Policy Director and Co-founder of The Green Tank, highlighted the role of nature investments as a key tool for biodiversity protection, resilience building, and sustainable development.
In her presentation, titled “Investing in Nature: Prospects and Emerging Tools“, she highlighted that despite the growing recognition of biodiversity’s contribution to economic stability and societal well-being, a significant financing gap remains in meeting the needs for ecosystem protection and restoration.
Drawing on the results of the Interreg Euro-MED ARTEMIS project, she focused on Posidonia oceanica meadows to illustrate the opportunities offered by emerging nature finance instruments, such as Posidonia credits, provided that the necessary conditions are in place to ensure their effective and credible implementation. This is a particularly timely topic, as it is currently being examined by a European Commission expert group on nature credits, following the publication of the EU Roadmap on Nature Credits in July 2025.
She emphasized that businesses investing in nature can generate environmental, social, and economic value, while also complying with emerging sustainability regulations and standards, strengthening their ESG strategies, and contributing to biodiversity conservation and climate risk mitigation.
