The challenges for the future after record low ETS emissions in Greece in 2023

The Green Tank’s annual report on the emissions of the Emissions Trading System (ETS) sectors – where historic low carbon emissions were recorded in Greece and the European Union for 2023 – was discussed by Ioanna Souka to journalist Sophia Christou and the online edition of newspaper “Kathimerini”.

The data analyst and main author of the report noted that Greece’s progress and the 71% reduction in emissions since 2005 is mainly due to the reduction in the use of lignite in power production.

At the same time, she warned that gas use has increased in power production in the first five months of 2024, creating a worrying trend for the future.

As far as industry emissions are concerned, Ioanna Souka commented that emissions from refineries have remained stable throughout the years, while cement plants are showing increased emissions since the pandemic despite the fact that the industry is in the process of decarbonization.
