Renewables fill in the shoes of lignite: For the first time renewables (RES) become the first source of electricity in Greece during the 1st quarter of the year, surpassing fossil gas, lignite and net imports.
Renewables and large hydro have leveled the competition with fossil gas, lignite and net imports combined, during the 1st quarter of the year.
Overall, here is how Greece’s electricity mix (during the 1st quarter of 2021) evolved compared to previous years. Compared to the 1st quarter of 2020 in particular:
Lignite: -22 %
Fossil gas: -4 %
Net imports: -71 %
RES: + 22 %
Large hydro: + 249 %
