A Just Energy Transition and the Role of Citizens: The Green Tank on Euranet

Ioanna Souka, Energy Policy Analyst at The Green Tank, spoke on the radio program Euranet and to journalists Nikos Andritsos and Korina Georgiou, about the just energy transition and the crucial role of citizens. As she stressed, “for the energy transition to succeed, citizen participation is essential.”

Referring to the Citizens Energy Package, on which The Green Tank submitted comments, she noted that its aim is to ensure that “the transition will be just, securing citizen participation while also protecting consumers, especially at a time of high electricity prices.”

Regarding Greece, she highlighted that the energy crisis encouraged more citizens to invest in self-production projects, with installed capacity reaching 1 GW. However, “over the past year we have seen stagnation due to the shift from net metering to net billing, which created disincentives.” Finally, on the new ETS2 that will take effect in 2027, she warned that, according to a study by The Green Tank & Facets, “it will directly burden households using fossil fuels, with costs estimated at up to €1.6 billion for the period 2027–2032.”
