During the latest episode of ECONEWS by DEI with Korina Georgiou, Ioanna Souka, Energy Policy Analyst at The Green Tank, commented on Greece’s performance in the Climate Change Performance Index 2026, where the country ranks 30th out of 63, dropping eight places compared to 2025.
As she explained, this decline is mainly due to Greece’s low score on climate policy, driven by the country’s increasing dependence on fossil gas and the new plans for gas infrastructure and hydrocarbon exploration during the recent period. At the same time, she highlighted two important positive trends: the continued reduction of lignite-based electricity production, which reached a historic low of 5.7% in 2024, and the rapid expansion of renewable energy, now covering more than 50% of electricity generation.
Looking ahead, Ioanna Souka noted that CCPI experts underline the urgent need to accelerate decarbonisation in transport, tourism, and buildings—sectors with high emissions and, in the case of road transport, expected increases. She also reminded viewers that the new carbon pricing system (ETS2), set to begin in 2027, makes targeted strategies in these sectors even more critical.
Finally, she stressed the importance of strengthening climate adaptation measures, as Greece continues to experience severe climate-related impacts, particularly the extensive wildfires of recent summers.
