The Green Tank is a member of the European Commission’s Expert Group on Nature Credits, contributing to discussions on the development of a credible framework for this innovative financing tool to support biodiversity protection and restoration.
The establishment of the Expert Group was foreseen in the Roadmap towards Nature Credits, announced by the European Commission in July 2025. Its members include representatives from the 27 EU Member States, as well as representatives of relevant stakeholders selected following a call for expressions of interest.
The Group’s work began with an online meeting held on 11 December 2025. Its second meeting took place in person in Brussels on 18–19 March 2026.
Through the submission of comments and the exchange of experiences and best practices, the Group’s work is continuing with the aim of shaping the key principles and conditions for the development of Nature Credits in the European Union. The Group’s work is expected to conclude in 2027.
Drawing on its experience from the Interreg ARTEMIS project, which develops innovative financing tools for the restoration of Mediterranean seagrass meadows, The Green Tank highlights that Nature Credits should complement public funding, be underpinned by scientific credibility, integrity and sound governance, and cover terrestrial as well as marine and coastal ecosystems.
