The Green Tank on SKAI FM: Why Electricity Prices Remain So High in Greece

Nikos Mantzaris, Lead Policy Analyst and co-founder of The Green Tank, spoke on Giorgos Psalti’s news radio show on SKAI 100.3 about the findings of The Green Tank’s latest analysis on trends in Greece’s retail electricity market.

As he noted, Greece has consistently ranked among the most expensive EU countries in the competitive component of electricity tariffs, while in 2025 it recorded the highest electricity prices relative to consumers’ purchasing power.

Nikos Mantzaris explained that high electricity prices are mainly linked to the extensive use of fossil gas for power generation, delays in the development of energy storage infrastructure, and insufficient consumer awareness of available electricity tariff options.

He also stressed the need to develop competitive bizonal and dynamic electricity tariffs, accelerate the rollout of smart meters, and improve consumer awareness in order to reduce electricity costs, at a time when 31% of households in Greece struggle to pay utility bills.
