Nature Credits and new approaches to financing nature protection and restoration were the focus of an article published in To Vima tis Kyriakis on 23 August 2026.
The article, “Nature enters the stock market,” explores the European Commission’s new initiative to establish Nature Credits, which aims to help address the significant funding gap for biodiversity protection and restoration.
The initiative is supported by the European Commission’s Expert Group on Nature Credits, of which The Green Tank is a member. In this context, the article highlights how the European Interreg Euro-MED ARTEMIS project, in which The Green Tank is a partner, has explored new financing opportunities for the restoration of Posidonia seagrass meadows in the Mediterranean.
The discussion is closely linked to the opinion piece “Nature Has Value. It Needs ‘Nature-Positive’ Investment” by Ioli Christopoulou, Policy Director and Co-founder of The Green Tank, also published in To Vima tis Kyriakis.
In her article, Ioli Christopoulou highlights the need to mobilise private capital for actions that deliver real and measurable benefits for nature, while stressing that Nature Credits require credible methodologies, transparent rules, and independent monitoring and verification.
From Posidonia seagrass meadows to forests, the challenge is the same: to recognise nature’s value and mobilise new resources for its protection and restoration, without turning nature into a commodity.
