Ioli Christopoulou and Nikos Mantzaris gave a talk titled “Renewable Energy Sources or Biodiversity? A real dilemma?”, at the online event organized by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN) on February 22, 2021.
With their joint talk, Ioli Christopoulou and Nikos Mantzaris elaborated on various aspects of the issue, resulting from the irreversible ongoing energy transition necessitated by the climate crisis and the indisputable need for nature conservation and restoration. They presented the international, European and national framework regarding RES and nature preservation, talked about the impact of RES on biodiversity and they presented alternative solutions, varied approaches and good practices that have been presented by various institutions. Noting the polarization of the public discourse in Greece, which includes extreme positions. Finally, they presented a series of recommendations for on various aspects of the issue, highlighting the need for local participation and dialogue on this issue.
