The increase of fossil gas in Greece’s electricity production not only threatens the progress of renewables, but also puts a strain on the climate with extra greenhouse gas emissions.
Based on The Green Tank’s data on the carbon footprint of electricity production, emissions from gas plants show a 31,1% increase in the first five months of this year compared to 2023.
Similarly to gas use in electricity production, RES curtailments have also increased. In the first five months of 2024 alone, almost twice as many RES curtailments have been made as in the whole of 2023 (430 GWh vs. 224 GWh).
Commenting on this data in a report by Katerina Christofilidou for ERTNEWS‘ Economy Insert (5/7/2024), The Green Tank’s data analyst Ioanna Souka highlighted the need to move forward with energy storage infrastructure and shift demand from evening to midday.
“If RES curtailments had been avoided, the share of gas in electricity production would have been reduced, or alternatively Greece could have become a net exporter of electricity,” she commented.
