At the event organised by the Hellenic Wind Energy Association (ELETAEN) during the 8th Verde.tec on Saturday, 28 February 2026, Nikos Mantzaris, Head of Policy Analysis and Co-founder of The Green Tank, presented the latest data on the trajectory of Greece’s energy and climate policy.
The analysis showed that high wind and overall renewable energy generation is consistently linked to lower wholesale electricity prices, with a significant portion of the benefits passed on to end consumers through retail prices. At the same time, the negative impacts on climate targets and energy costs were highlighted, resulting from increased reliance on fossil gas and RES curtailments, even during periods of high clean energy output.
The conclusion is clear: a balanced renewable energy mix combined with storage technologies is the most effective pathway to decarbonise power generation, lower electricity prices, and strengthen the country’s competitiveness.
