The role of fossil gas in the transition of Western Macedonia

Nikos Mantzaris spoke to journalist Machie Tratsa about the fossil gas investments that are included in the Master Plan for the lignite region of Western Macedonia.

He insists that if all the included fossil gas investments are actualized then Western Macedonia will transform from a Lignite to a Fossil Gas Center.

Moreover he highlights that the provisional investments on fossil gas will skyrocket fossil gas consumption in the area from today’s 30 GWh to more than 13,000 GWh in 2029. This kind of planing cannot be considered as “green” and is not compatible with the European Green Deal nor the European target for climate neutrality in 2050.
