The carbon footprint of electricity production – July 2023
In the first 7 months of 2023, 8.61 million tonnes of CO2 were emitted from Greece's power sector decreased by 2.59 million tonnes (-23.1%) compared to the same period in 2022. Only 3 lignite plants produce almost 50% of the total CO2 emissions of the 17 thermal plants in the country's interconnected network.
Trends in electricity production – July 2023
1.2 TWh higher electricity production from renewables compared to that from fossil gas and lignite combined in the first seven months of the year (+11.2%). For the first time after 12 consecutive months of decreases, demand increased in July 2023 (5505 GWh) compared to the same month of the previous year (5019 GWh). Imports also increased in the first seven months of 2023 compared to the same period of 2022 (+87.5%).

Only 3 lignite plants produce 54.2% of the total CO2 emissions of the 17 thermal plants in the country's interconnected network. By May 2023, PPC has spent 52.2% of its total carbon budget available for the year.
Trends in electricity production – June 2023
58.6% share for clean energy in domestic electricity generation and 49.7% in meeting demand for the first half of 2023. For the twelfth consecutive month, electricity demand decreased compared to the same month last year (-10.4%), while the total for the six-month period was down 8.5%.
