The carbon footprint of electricity production– August 2023
In the first 8 months of 2023, 10.17 million tonnes of CO2 were emitted from Greece's power sector, decreased by 3.51 million tonnes (-25.6%) compared to the same period in 2022.
Trends in electricity production – August 2023
A historical record of monthly electricity production from renewables was recorded in August 2023 (2231 GWh), while together with large hydro (16683 GWh), they recorded high electricity production in the first eight months of 2023. For the second consecutive month, demand increased compared to the same month last year (+5.7%).

Trends in Greece’s fossil gas consumption & imports – August 2023
A 18.9% decrease in fossil gas consumption in the first eight months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022 and a 15.6% decrease compared to the 5-year average. However, a partial increase of Russian gas imports was observed in the first seven months of 2023, as Greece recorded a 21.1% increase compared to 2022, due to the increase in LNG (+4.2 TWh).
Energy communities: Solutions for strengthening renewables-based self-production of electricity by citizens in lignite areas
New report by The Green Tank shows that the installation of 272-300 MW photovoltaics by energy communities combined with electricity storage systems using the available financial resources can fully cover the needs of approximately 245,000 residential consumers in Greece’s lignite areas, mitigating the lack of grid space.

The carbon footprint of electricity production – July 2023
In the first 7 months of 2023, 8.61 million tonnes of CO2 were emitted from Greece's power sector decreased by 2.59 million tonnes (-23.1%) compared to the same period in 2022. Only 3 lignite plants produce almost 50% of the total CO2 emissions of the 17 thermal plants in the country's interconnected network.
Trends in electricity production – July 2023
1.2 TWh higher electricity production from renewables compared to that from fossil gas and lignite combined in the first seven months of the year (+11.2%). For the first time after 12 consecutive months of decreases, demand increased in July 2023 (5505 GWh) compared to the same month of the previous year (5019 GWh). Imports also increased in the first seven months of 2023 compared to the same period of 2022 (+87.5%).
