Trends in electricity production – May 2023
Record production from RES and hydro (9749 GWh) in the first five months of 2023 compared to the same period of the last 10 years with a share of almost 60% (59.4%) in domestic electricity production and almost 50% (49.7%) in meeting demand (49.7%). 1/3 (-33.7%) lower contribution of fossil gas compared to the same period of 2022, while electricity demand decreased by 8.2%.

The annual analysis by The Green Tank shows that compared to 2005, Greece recorded a 57.1% reduction in emissions from all installations in the sectors of electricity and heat generation and energy-intensive industry covered by the ETS, ranking 6th in the EU-27 and 12 places higher than the EU-27 average (-37.9%).

Zero Russian gas imports to Greece in May for the second time in 2023. The lowest gas consumption compared to the same month of the previous five years was recorded, resulting from the decrease of gas use in electricity production, while the cumulative decrease for the first five months of 2023 was 24.3%.
