Greece on track to reduce its emissions in the ETS sectors

The annual analysis by The Green Tank shows that compared to 2005, Greece recorded a 57.1% reduction in emissions from all installations in the sectors of electricity and heat generation and energy-intensive industry covered by the ETS, ranking 6th in the EU-27 and 12 places higher than the EU-27 average (-37.9%).

Zero Russian gas imports to Greece in May for the second time in 2023. The lowest gas consumption compared to the same month of the previous five years was recorded, resulting from the decrease of gas use in electricity production, while the cumulative decrease for the first five months of 2023 was 24.3%.

In the first three months of ’23 the carbon footprint of electricity production declined by 21.5% compared to the same period in 2022 and by 39.6% compared to the 5-year average. By April 2023, #PPC has spent 38.1% of its total carbon budget available for the year according to the clauses of its sustainability-linked bonds.

58.2% share of renewables in electricity production and 48.7% in meeting demand in the first four months of 2023. Production from renewables exceeded that from fossil gas and lignite combined by 1188 GWh, while electricity demand was down by 9.7% compared to the same period in 2022.

Trends in Greece’s fossil gas consumption & imports – April 2023

Despite an increase of 20.9% in April 2023 compared to the same month in 2022, overall for the first four months of the year, Greece's consumption of fossil gas decreased by 25.9% and 21.1%, respectively, compared to the same period last year and the five-year average. According to the latest available Eurostat monthly data, as of March Greece ranked first inthe EU-27 in reducing consumption, and above the EU-27 average in limiting the use of Russian gas (-51.8%) in the first two months of the year.
