The Green Tank’s analysis of the public poll conducted by MARC in the period 21-29 October 2020 with the questionnaire that was co-developed by The Green Tank, diANEOsis and MARC, showcased a series of interesting findings on how the citizens of the lignite regions themselves view the lignite phase out and the transition to the post-lignite era. Green Tank’s Nikos Mantzaris participated in the pan-European conference of Client Earth, an organization of environmental lawyers, on November 9th. In particular, in the session on Just Transition he presented a brief history of the transition in Greece with emphasis on the role of mayors and NGOs in the progress that has been made during the last 5 years. He also analyzed the basic lessons (positive and negative) learnt from the course of the transition in Greece so far;

Nikos Mantzaris participated in the online forum “Western Macedonia-Megalopolis: Transition to the post-lignite era and new business opportunities” organized by Enterprise Greece and the Coordinating Committee for the Development Transition Plan (SDAM), under the auspices of the Ministries of Environment & Energy and Development & Investments, on October 22, 2020.
The Green Tank submitted comments and specific recommendations to the public consultation on the Master Plan for the transition of Greece’s lignite regions to the post-lignite period.
Ioanna Theodosiou and Nikos Mantzaris from The Green Tank participated in the 3rd Forum of Mayors on Just Transition. The Forum, seeks to bring together mayors of coal and lignite regions from across Europe to exchange good practices and explore joint actions on issues related to the shift of the local economies towards a sustainable direction.
Nikos Mantzaris gave a presentation on the role of Non-Governmental Organizations in the Just Transition of lignite regions to the post-lignite era at the 6th Regional Conference “Move.Link.Engage: Partnership, Solidarity and Responsibilityin the Post-COVID 19th Era” organized in September 21-23 by the Belgrade Open School (BOS) with the support of the Swedish Embassy in Belgrade.
It is one year since the Greek Prime Minister announced the historic commitment that Greece is to completely phase-out lignite by 2028 (at the latest), speaking at the UN Special Climate Action Summit in New York.
