Trends in fossil gas consumption & imports – December 2023

Fossil gas consumption in 2023 was 50.91 TWh, down 10.1% compared to 2022 and 27.2% compared to 2021, the year the energy crisis started. Industry sector increased its gas use by 84.7% compared to 2022, while the other two uses, namely electricity and distribution networks, recorded a decrease of 17.1% and 8.1% respectively. Trends in electricity production – November 2023

Renewables without large hydro (19,642 GWh) exceeded fossil gas and lignite combined (17,474 GWh) in the first eleven months of 2023, by 2.2 TWh, while together with large hydro (23,190 GWh) they covered more than half of demand in the eleven-month period (51.2%).

Trends in electricity production – October 2023

Renewables and large hydro (21,069 GWh) covered more than half of the demand (50.8%) in the first ten months of 2023. In October 2023 the highest monthly production from large hydro (441 GWh) for 2023 was recorded. Additionally, it was the second net export month for 2023 after September, with net exports of 99 GWh. On the other hand, lignite and fossil gas recorded increase compared to October 2022 (+29.2% and +67.3% respectively).
