In the first three months of 2023, a total of 3.81 million tonnes of CO2 were emitted for electricity production, reduced by 27.5% compared to the same period in 2022 and by 32.3% compared to the 5-year average. By March 2023, PPC has spent 31.2% of its total carbon budget available for the year.
Free fall for fossil gas in electricity generation during the first quarter of 2023 (-46.2%). Lignite’s contribution also decreased by 9.3%. Renewables and large hydro with a share of 48.1% outperformed fossil fuels by 14 percentage points. However, net electricity imports were up 87.1%, while the country missed the EU target of -10% in demand in the 5-month reduction period (Nov. 2022-Mar. 2023) by 354 GWh.

Greece completed the eight-month period of reduction in fossil gas consumption set by the EU (August 2022-March 2023), with -20.9% compared to the five-year average -thus far exceeding the European target of -15%- and -31.8% compared to the same eight-month period of the previous year.
A total of 2.67 million tonnes of CO2 were emitted in the first two months of 2023 for electricity production, reduced by 14.7% compared to the same period in 2022. PPC has already spent 22.2% of its carbon budget for 2023 according to the sustainability clause of its bond loans.
