Climate crisis is one of the greatest global challenges of the 21st century.
Human-caused greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel energy production systems, animal herding, the loss of forests, marine ecosystems and other natural carbon dioxide sinks lead to global temperature rise and instability in the global climate.
As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports show, there is no time to lose. Urgent action is needed if we want to keep the global temperature rise to 1.5 οC compared to prο-industrial levels and to meet the commitments agreed upon in the 2015 Paris Agreement.
The significant progress made in electricity production at national and European level due to the transition to renewables opens a window of opportunity as this sector has been responsible for the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions over time. The phase out of fossil fuels in electricity production by 2035 is a prerequisite for achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
At the same time, attention turns to emissions reduction from other polluting sectors, such as buildings and road transport, in a way that protects the most vulnerable, as well as on the green transformation of industry in a way that ensures its competitiveness.
By drafting policy recommendations to phase out fossil fuels in electricity and other polluting sectors, The Green Tank works both in Greece and the EU for the socially just transformation of the energy model and the shift towards renewables. It promotes solutions based on energy efficiency, energy saving, self-production and energy community projects, as well as the protection and restoration of nature.
