The new allocation of revenues earned from the auctioning of ETS allowances will deprive lignite municipalities of 16 million euros

Nikos Mantzaris, Senior Policy Analyst at The Green Tank, comments on the financial loss for the regions of Kozani, Florina and Megalopolis caused by the latest amendment of the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy that provides for a new allocation of the revenues earned from the auctioning of ETS allowances.

As the article points out, under the new allocation, the revenue percentage for the regions of Kozani, Florina and Megalopolis has been reduced from 4.5% to 3.5%. While the amount was intended through the Green Fund to fund actions, support local economies, and create new jobs in lignite-producing municipalities, part of it will be instead allocated to the Ministry of Environment and Energy to cover operating costs.

Nikos Mantzaris comments that under a realistic estimate for 2022, the lignite municipalities would receive 72 million euros, equal to 4.5 % of the funds, while now the amount drops to about 56 million euros equal to 3.5%.  This loss amounts to 16 million euros which will be now allocated instead to the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
