The three biggest challenges of Greece’s new NECP

A brief overview of the detailed comments the Green Tank submitted to the public consultation regarding the country’s National Energy and Climate plan.

The overview focuses on the 3 most important challenges resulting from the implementation of the new NECP, namely:

  1. Just Transition: the difficulty of transforming the local economies in Greece’s lignite regions until 2023 when all existing lignite plants will be retired
  2. Swift deployment of renewables and construction of energy storage infrastructure: The new NECP promotes the use of a natural gas as a transition fuel to substitute lignite-based electricity production instead of more renewables and energy storage
  3. The much anticipated new spatial plan for renewables is key in effectively protecting Greece’s rich biodiversity while increasing the penetration of renewables in Greece’s electricity mix
