What will the rise of the Greens in the EU elections lead to?

On June 7, 2019, Ioli Christopoulou spoke to 102 fm of ERT3, about the great success of the Greens in the recent European elections in several European countries and its significance in shaping European policy during the next five years.

She described in contrast the not so optimistic situation of the Greens in Greece and the low priority the issues of environmental protection and tackling the climate crisis have in Greece compared to other European countries.

Characteristically, she mentioned the last-minute amendment the Minister of Environment and Energy passed through the Greek Parliament the same day, giving the green light for subsidies to PPC’s new lignite “Ptolemaida 5”, which is in sharp contrast to both the new EU rules on capacity mechanisms as well as the global effort for tackling the climate crisis.
