The hunt for the lignite exemptions

Statement on the attempts by the Greek government and PPC to become eligible for a derogation which would subsidize PPC’s new lignite plant “Ptolemaida 5”:

«The lack of economic viability for Ptolemaida 5 was sealed in 2017 when Greece’s request to obtain yet another derogation, that of free emission allowances, was rejected by the EU. All political parties in Greece should accept the fact that this investment can no longer be saved and seek alternative solutions in close collaboration with PPC and the lenders of this project», said Nikos Mantzaris, Senior Policy Analyst at the Green Tank.

The article was published in “Vima” on 23.6.2019 and presents the derogations that PPC has been pursuing during the last few years in order to support the lignite industry (free emission allowances, capacity mechanism, extension of the operating hours for TPS Kardia and Amyntaio)
