Ptolemaida 5 will be economically non-viable despite the susbsidies

Mavropigi, Greece, March 17, 2019 – Named "black source" in Greek, Mavropigi is a village in Kozani, which has seen its population go from 774 in 1991 to zero today. In 2015 residents started to abandon it, as the open cast mine that feeds utility PPC’s coal plants began to eat at its edges. Today the village is abandoned, and being slowly demolished for salvage and to make way for the continued expansion of the mine. Only the church and graveyard will remain, as neither can be moved according to Greek law. Other villages, Komanos, Charavgi, Kleitos, Kardia have already been devoured by PPC mines, and the nearby communities of Anargiroi, Akrini and Pontokomi will soon follow. Nikos Mantzaris comments on the viability of PPC’s new lignite plant “Ptolemaida 5” in relation to the subsidies the Greek government is attempting to offer and the CO2 costs, in an article by Marianna Tzanne.
