The necessary measures to mitigate RES curtailments

The issue of renewable energy curtailments – which have exceeded 500 GWh since the beginning of 2024 – needs to be addressed by the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MEEN). According to the new National Energy and Climate Plan, the installed battery capacity target is set to be increased.

In a relevant article by Dimitris Avarlis for Energygame.gr (28/06/2024), Nikos Mantzaris proposed three measures to mitigate the problem of RES curtailments:

  1. Increase energy storage.
  2. Re-allocate demand to midday hours.
  3. Accelerate the installation of “smart” meters.

The last measure is expected to pave the way for the implementation of “orange” tariffs, with The Green Tank’s policy analyst stressing the need for an information campaign by MEEN to raise awareness of these tariffs.

According to the article, the Ministry of Environment and Energy is also working on a comprehensive legislative and regulatory framework for injecting electricity generated by renewable energy plants into the grids, as well as a plan for the rapid development of storage capacity.
